Geography
Kelowna lies in the Okanagan Valley, a
4½ hour drive east of Vancouver. The Okanagan is nestled between
the Cascade and Monashee Mountains and is renowned for its climate,
clean air, pure water, orchards, vineyards, estate wineries, and recreational
activities (including skiing, boating, hiking and golf).
Kelowna, a city of about 100,000 people,
is the center of a larger district with a population of about 200,000.
It lies mid-way up the steep-sided shores of Okanagan Lake, which cuts
through the Thompson Plateau at 1200 ft. above sea level and rises to
3,500 ft. The Rockies to the east rise to more than 14,000 ft. and to
the west, the coastal Cascade range rises more than 10,000 ft. The climate
is continental - Spring starts in early April, followed by a hot Summer
(June to the end of August) and a mild Fall, which usually lasts to the
end of November.
School Location/Property
The school is located one block from Okanagan
Lake, in a mixed suburban and rural neighbourhood, in the lovely Mission
area of the city of Kelowna.
Our property consists of the Main Building
which houses classrooms, a science lab and the Administration office.
Completed in 1992, this unique structure was designed, with inspiration
from the architectural insights of Rudolph Steiner, by BC designer Dieter
Goldammer.
South of the main building is the Andrew Wehrle
Building, the original school structure, containing more classrooms,
the Kindergarten, children’s library, faculty rooms and a full kitchen.
Separated from the main area is our Preschool/Eurythmy
Building with its own play area which was also designed by Dieter
Goldammer. There is another detached building used for woodworking.
A large vegetable and fruit garden, several
playground areas and a basketball court are included on the property.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and has a wonderful bell tower
courtyard with a cascading pond.
The
Preschool and Parents & Small Children programs are held at Cameron House,
a heritage building located in central Kelowna. It is leased from the
City of Kelowna and has been completely renovated by the Waldorf School
Association of Kelowna.
